Grandstream HT8xx Analog Telephone Adapter

Setup and configuration of Grandstream HT801, HT802, HT812, or HT818 analog telephone adapters for VoIP. Connect traditional phone lines to your VoIP system.

Setup steps

  1. 1Unbox the ATA and locate the Ethernet port (labeled 'Internet'), phone port (labeled 'Phone'), and power connection. Do not plug in power yet.
  2. 2Connect an Ethernet cable from your network switch or router into the 'Internet' port on the back of the ATA. Leave the 'Phone' port empty for now.
  3. 3Plug the power adapter into the ATA and the wall outlet. Wait 30 seconds for the device to fully boot. The LED should turn from red to green.
  4. 4To find the ATA's IP address, pick up a phone handset connected to the phone port (or use the onscreen menu). Dial '***' (three asterisks). The IVR voice menu will read the IP address to you, or you can write it down from the web GUI.
  5. 5On your computer, open a web browser and enter the IP address (example: http://192.168.1.80). Press Enter to access the configuration page.
  6. 6Log in using default credentials: Username 'admin' and password 'admin'. You should now see the ATA's configuration interface.
  7. 7Go to the 'Profile 1' or 'Account' tab. Enter your VoIP provider's SIP server address, your SIP username (phone number or extension), and SIP password. Set 'NAT Traversal' to 'Keep-Alive' if behind a router.
  8. 8In the 'Phone Port' settings, choose 'Pulse' or 'Tone' dialing (Tone is standard for most offices). Set 'Caller ID' display to 'Yes' if supported. Leave other settings at default unless your VoIP provider specifies otherwise.
  9. 9Click 'Submit' or 'Save' to store your configuration. The ATA will reboot automatically (1-2 minutes). Once rebooted, connect your analog phone to the 'Phone' port and test with a dial tone.

Troubleshooting

No dial tone on the connected analog phone+

Verify the phone is properly connected to the 'Phone' port (not the Internet port). Power cycle the ATA by unplugging it for 30 seconds. In the web interface, confirm your SIP account is properly configured with server, username, and password. Check that your VoIP account is active with your provider. If the LED is not solid green, check the Ethernet connection.

Phone rings when it shouldn't or no incoming calls are reaching the phone+

In the web interface, go to Phone Port settings and ensure 'Ring on Incoming Call' is enabled. Check that your VoIP provider has the correct phone number routed to your account. Test by calling the number from a mobile phone. Verify the ATA's SIP registration shows as 'Registered' in the web interface.

Can make outgoing calls but incoming calls fail or don't ring+

This typically indicates an inbound routing issue. Contact your VoIP provider to verify the phone number is correctly provisioned to your account. Ask if they require any specific settings like an Inbound Proxy. Try re-saving your SIP credentials in the web interface even if they appear correct.

Cannot access the web interface or IP address lookup fails+

Pick up the connected phone and dial '***' again to reconfirm the IP address. Verify your computer is on the same network as the ATA. Try pinging the ATA's IP address from your computer's command prompt. If you still cannot connect, factory reset the ATA by holding the Reset button on the back for 10-15 seconds with power on.

Call quality is poor, audio is choppy, or calls drop frequently+

Ensure your internet connection can support VoIP (minimum 128 Kbps upload and download). Enable QoS (Quality of Service) on your router to prioritize VoIP traffic. In the ATA web interface, check that 'Silence Suppression' and 'Comfort Noise' are set appropriately. Avoid running large downloads or video streaming while on calls.

Pro tips

  • The HT8xx series supports both SIP and H.323 protocols—make sure your VoIP provider uses SIP (most modern providers do) or change the protocol in the web interface if directed by your provider.
  • Some ATAs support multiple profiles (Phone 1, Phone 2)—if you need to connect two separate phone numbers to two different analog phones, you can configure them on different profiles.
  • If your phone has a distinctive ring feature, enable it in the Phone Port settings to distinguish between different incoming calls or extensions.
  • Enable 'Maintain FXO Session' in NAT settings if your connection is unstable or you experience frequent call drops.
