What Your Check Engine Light Is Actually Telling You

The light is a symptom, not a diagnosis

A stored code tells us which circuit reported a problem. It does not tell us which part failed — and that difference is most of the bill.

Steady light

The car has logged a fault. It is usually safe to drive to the shop, but do not ignore it for weeks: a small misfire can turn into a catalytic converter.

Flashing light

Stop driving when it is safe to do so. A flashing light means active misfire, and that damages expensive parts quickly.
