How to Pass Your Maine State Inspection the First Time

The handful of things that fail a sticker most often — and the ten-minute check you can do in your own driveway first.

Most failures are small, and most are avoidable

A rejected sticker is rarely a blown engine. It is almost always something small that has been quietly getting worse.

Check these before you come in

  • Lights. Walk around with the car running: headlights, brake lights, plate light, turn signals, reverse.
  • Wipers and washers. Streaking blades and an empty washer bottle both fail.
  • Tires. Below 2/32" of tread is an automatic rejection. A quarter works if you do not own a tread gauge.
  • Warning lights. An illuminated check-engine or ABS light will stop the inspection before it starts.
  • Glass. Cracks in the driver’s sweep are a common surprise.
If something on that list is borderline, tell us when you book. It is far cheaper to fix it in the same visit than to come back.
